If your Merkury smart light bulb doesn’t connect to Wi-fi in the Geeni app, there are a few reasons why this happens, and it can mainly be narrowed down to a bug within the app or to router issues.
You may be scratching your head, thinking you followed the setup instructions as carefully as possible, but for whatever reason, you still can’t get the smart bulb to connect to WIFI.
Luckily, I have a range of fixes that are likely to get your Merkury light bulb to connect to the Geeni app.
Why Won’t My Mekury Light Bulb Connect?
1. Issue Within Geeni App (Likely A Bug)
I know you’re probably thinking, “There’s that disgusting bug word again!” Although bugs are super annoying, it is something to take into consideration as a reason why your Merkury light bulb won’t connect to the Geeni app, meaning it can’t connect to WI-FI.
There may be something internal going on with the app. So, it’s worth taking a look into it to weigh out any deeper issues that are possibly taking place.
Although app bugs can be sneaky and nasty little critters, there’s always a way to take them out and exterminate them for good. There are a few quick fixes and resolutions to resolve these buggy situations, but first, let’s make sure that you try the connection steps again to ensure that there isn’t a bug.
Fix – Try to Connect Your Merkury Bulb to the Geeni App Using These Steps
You should have the Geeni app already on your phone with a verification code email and password.
1. Once you’re logged in, plug in the smart light bulb and screw it in.
2. Turn on the power by the switch. The bulb should be quickly flashing 2 × per second.
3. Go to the devices section and on the top corner of the Devices screen, click (+).
4. Make sure the bulb is flashing quickly, indicating it’s ready to connect. If not, turn the bulb off and on 3 times until it is flashing. Press “Next Step.”
5. Enter your Wi-Fi network and password.
6. The Geeni app will try to connect your Mekury smart bulb to the internet.
Fix 2 – If Connection Fails, Connect Using AP Mode
To get into AP Mode, follow the following steps:
- Reset once (off and on 3 times) to reach Easy Mode. This is the normal way the app will try to connect the Merkury bulb to WI-FI. In Easy Mode, which is what the bulb will be in after completing this step, you’ll see the bulb flashing quickly, 2x per second.
- Reset again (off and on 3 times) to reach AP Mode, which is the Backup Mode to help connect. When the bulb is in AP Mode, you’ll see the bulb blinking slowly, every 3 seconds.
3. In the devices section on the top right corner of the screen, click (+). Choose “AP Mode” in the top corner.
4. Click Next and enter your Wi-Fi details.
5. Follow the instructions to choose the device from your Wi-Fi list.
6. The bulb should connect now.
Fix 3 – Update App
If your Merkury light bulb still wasn’t able to connect to WIFI via the Geeni app, you should check if an update is available and try updating the app the app or play store.
On you’ve updated the app, repeat the connection steps in the previous steps and see if that does anything for you.
Fix 4 – Log Out, Then In
Performing a log out of the app and then logging back in is a quick way for you to get rid of any further issues with the Geeni app. Once you log out of the app, wait for approximately 30 seconds before logging in. After 30 seconds have passed, log back into the app with your credentials and attempt the connection steps to your mercury light bulb again.
Logging completely out and then logging in allows you to clear out excessive usage of the app that may be hindering its’ productivity. After performing this action, you should consolidate the issue further for you.
Fix 5 – Clear Cache
Having severe cache backup can cause the functionality of app to slow down. So, you may want to consider clearing the cache storage. Cache storage can build faster than you think. Most people tend to forget about cache storage, especially when the app they are using isn’t working correctly.
To clear the Geeni app cache on your Android device, you must:
- Go to app settings.
- Tap on Apps and Notification in the menu.
- From here, locate the Geeni app.
- Tap on the Geeni app to open its’ properties.
- You will then see some options appear. Scroll downward until you see the section for storage.
- Tap on storage.
- On the next page, you will see the option to clear the cache.
- Tap on the clear cache to clear the cache storage of the Geeni app.
For users that are using an iPhone or iOS device, to clear the Geeni app cache, you must:
- Navigate to the settings on your device.
- Select the option for storage.
- Select Internal Storage located just under Device storage
- Tap on the section for Cached Data
- From here, tap on OK when you are prompted to clear cache storage.
After the cache is cleared on your Android or iOS device, relaunch the app.
After you are signed back into Geeni with your credentials, attempt to sign in and connect the Merkury light bulb again.
Fix 6 – Contact Geeni Support
If you still experience issues with your Merkury smart bulb not being able to connect to the internet, then your smart bulb may have a manufacturing defect. This is especially if you’ve never been able to connect it to the internet via the Geeni app. Please reach out to Geeni to get support on the issue using the link below:

2. 5 GHz is Enabled on Router
Modern routers use two major technologies for internet connection: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The difference between the two is based on Speed and Range.
- 2.4GHz (default) – more range, less speed
- 5GHz – less range, more speed
From this, you can see that even though the 5GHz will have more speed, range is more crucial for your smart bulb than speed therefore 2.4GHz will need to be enabled. The Merkury smart bulb doesn’t support the 5GHz Wi-Fi Network but instead supports the 2.4 GHz network.
Fix – Turn Off 5GHz In Router
Given the explanation about 5GHz, it is clear that using the 2.4GHz frequency serves a virtual reality system better. Most WIFI routers use the 2.4GHz by default, so you need to force yours to revert back to using 2.4GHz.
The interface to complete this task depends on the kind of WIFI router you are using. You may consult your ISP for guidance. However, I have presented a general guide for all WIFI routers below:
- Connect your PC to the router using an Ethernet cable.
- Open a web browser on your PC and enter the admin IP address of your router in the address bar. The default IP addresses are usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. If you are unsure of the IP address, refer to your router’s manual or documentation.
- On the login page enter the admin credentials. This usually comes with the router manual. For most routers, username and password are both “admin”. Or, admin and password for username and password, respectively. If you’ve changed the credentials and don’t remember them, consult your router’s manual for the correct login information.
- Once logged in, navigate to the Wireless Settings section or the appropriate wireless configuration page.
- Look for the 5GHz frequency settings. It may be labeled as “Wireless Radio Frequency,” “Wireless Mode,” or something similar.
- Disable or uncheck the option for the 5GHz frequency. This may involve toggling a switch, unchecking a box, or selecting the appropriate option from a dropdown menu.
- Save the changes or apply the settings. The router will likely prompt you to confirm the changes before proceeding.
- After saving the changes, the router will revert to the default 2.4GHz frequency for wireless connections.
3. Internet Connection Issue
The most common issue may be your internet connection. If you reside in a rural area that is considered to be a country road area, your internet connection may be a little weak. This is the biggest issue that’ll cause your device not to have a strong internet connection, therefore not allowing apps to function. So try the previous steps in places around your house that allow you to have a stronger internet connection.
If you live in a home where there is a constant flow of an Internet signal, and there are multiple devices connected to that signal, this may also be a red flag to investigate.
There are a plethora of reasons why your internet connection on your device may be poor, which could be preventing it from connecting to the app, but luckily I have fixes.
Fix – Restart WiFi Connection on Your Phone
Your internet connection is what provides a steady signal for your apps to function properly. If it’s the culprit, simply turn it off then on.
For Android users, you can check this by doing the following:
- Scroll your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom until a row of options appears.
- On that row, you will see a button for your data, flashlight, rotation, and Wi-Fi.
- If the Wi-Fi is on, it will be highlighted. Tap on it to un-highlight and then tap once more to switch the connection back on.
For iOS users, you must proceed with these steps to test your Wi-Fi:
- From the home screen of the iPhone / iOS device, go to settings and then tap Wi-Fi.
- If your Wi-Fi is turned on, tap it to toggle the Wi-Fi off.
- Once the Wi-Fi is off, toggle to switch again to switch the Wi-Fi signal back on.
If you are using a data connection, switch to a Wi-Fi connection instead. If there is a complication with your Wi-Fi connection, it’s highly recommended to reach out to your internet service provider for the resolution.
Fix 2 – Restart Router
Most routers have a tiny reset button located at the back of its panel. You may need a pen-pointed tool to reach the reset button in the back of the router.
If you have a pin-pointed tool, press and hold the small reset button on the back of the router. Press and firmly hold down the button for approximately 10 seconds, and then release. This will automatically reset the router.
4. Issue with Merkury Smart Bulb
If there’s an issue with your smart bulb, it won’t be able to connect to wifi. Because it has limited settings and controls that could potentially fix a bug, the only option you really have is to reset it.
Fix – How to Reset Merkury Smart Bulb
A factory reset is the last resort to fixing the internet issue you’re having with your Merkruy Smart bulb.
To factory reset:
Reset the bulb by turning it off and on three times.
- Reset once (off and on 3 times) to reach Easy Mode. This is the normal way the app will try to connect the Merkury bulb to WI-FI. In Easy Mode, which is what the bulb will be in after completing this step, you’ll see the bulb flashing quickly, 2x per second.
5. Geeni Server is Down
Sometimes, when an app or website isn’t working the way you expect, it is due to the server for that app or website currently being down.
Usually, suppose there is an internal issue with the app; in that case, the app developers will notify consumers via email or text message, notifying them that there is an ongoing issue they are working hard to resolve.
So, if you are experiencing any technical issues with not being able to connect your Merkury smart bulb to WIFI via the Geeni app, it’s possible that Geenis servers may be down right now.
As a forewarning, there is never a set time or deadline for how long a server may be down for. So, if you are waiting for the server to revive, you can utilize your time wisely.
6. Device Issue
If there’s an issue with your device, is can affect how the Geeni app performs. In this case, you’ll need to wipe any bugs that could be lurking within your phone.
Fix – Force Restart Device
Suppose there are still issues after performing a restart; you can perform a force restart on your device.
When you perform a force restart, you are manually turning the device off directly.
- To perform a force restart correctly, you will press and hold the power button on your Android or iPhone iOS device until it powers off.
- After the device is powered off, wait approximately 30 seconds to a minute before powering the device back on.
