What happens if you have lost your programming code? Without your programming code for the Schlage Lock, you may not be able to enter your home if there is something wrong with the lock.

You also can not program your Schlage Lock if you do not have the programming code. Thankfully there are ways you can reset your Schlage Lock and set a new programming code without having the recent programming code.

Follow these steps to see what you can do when you have lost your programming code to your Schlage Lock. Note, when you are doing any programming on the lock make sure your door is open so you do not lock yourself out of your home.

What to Do If You’ve Lost Schlage Programming Code

Losing the programming code to your Schlage Lock can become a problem, you can not program your lock without the programming code. Meaning you can not add any new user codes, delete any codes, or access other features that are available.

There are a few ways you can retrieve the default programming code or reset the programming code for your Schlage Lock. Listed below I will be going over ways you can either retrieve the default programming code or reset the programming code on your Schlage Lock.

Read below on what you should do next if you have lost your programming code on your Schlage Lock.

1. Find the Default Programming Code For Your Schlage Lock

The first thing you should do when you have lost your programming code to your Schlage Lock is check the Schlage Lock manual and any documents that can with the lock for the default programming code.

Depending on what type and model of Schlage Lock you have the default code will vary. Below are a few options for common default codes you can try.

Check the sticker on the back of the lock: Remove the lock from the door on the back there should be a sticker with the default code. Note, there might be two different default user codes, just make sure you use the right one and you should now have access to your Schlage Lock. 

Use the last four digits of Schlage Lock SN (Serial Number): Some models of Schlage Lock use the last four digits of the serial number as the default programming code. You can check for the serial number by looking for it on the lock itself or you can find it in the Schlage Lock manual. 

0-0-0-0: Try entering this code, for some Schlage Lock this is the most common default programming code. 

1-2-3-4: This number sequence is another common default programming code that is used on the Schlage Lock. 

Note, that if none of these default programming codes work on your Schlage Lock you should call the Schlage customer service and see if they can assist you. Your next step if this does not work is to reset your Schlage Lock to the factory settings. 

2. Factory Reset Your Schlage Lock

Doing a factory reset on your Schlage Lock will clear all user codes and programming codes, allowing you to start a new one. When you do a factory reset you will be able to set a new programming code and have access to your home once again. Follow these steps to reset your Schlage Lock to the factory settings. 

Step One: Remove the battery cover on the interior assembly of the Schlage Lock. 

Step Two: Disconnect the battery.

Step Three: Look for the reset button. Note, the reset button will be different depending on what model of Schlage Lock you own. 

Step Four: Press and hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds or until you see the LED light flash and you hear a beep. Note, you may need a paperclip or something small to press and hold the reset button. 

Step Five: Your Schlage Lock is now down with the factory reset, assemble to lock, and set a new programming code.

3. Change the Schlage Lock Programming Code

This action should be done if you have found programming code you lost or did a factory reset on your Schlage Lock. Changing the programming code ensures that your house is secure with a code that only you know.

Note, make sure you choose a programming code that you will remember and have it written down somewhere in a place you know you can find again. Follow these steps to change the programming code on your Schlage Lock. 

Step One: Enter the current programming code, this can also be the programming default code if you did not find the current programming code. 

Step Two: Press and hold the Schlage button on your keypad, this button is usually located at the bottom or top of the lock. 

Step Three: While still holding the Schlage button enter the new programming code that you wish to have. Make sure this code is hard for others to guess but easy for you to remember. 

Step Four: After setting a new programming code you will want to test it to make sure it works. Remember to write this new code down and put it in a safe place that only you know. 

4. Delete Default User Codes on Your Schlage Lock

Deleting the default user codes on your Schlage Lock can give you peace of mind knowing that whoever may have this user code can not access your home.

It is easy to delete the default user codes and you can create new ones that only you know to better secure your home. This step should be done once you have created a new programming code that only you know.

Keep in mind that when you delete the default user code and pre-set access codes that came with the Schlage Lock will be removed. Follow these steps to delete the user default codes from your Schlage Lock. 

Step One: Enter your current programming code on your keypad, this will access the programming mode on your Schlage Lock. 

Step Two: Press the Schlage button.

Step Three: Press the number 2, this will allow you to access the deletion option.

Step Four: Enter the 4-digit user code you want to be deleted. You will hear a beep indicating that the user code has been deleted.

Step Five: Repeat this process with the default codes you want to be deleted. 

5. Adding New User Codes to Your Schlage Lock

Once you have deleted all the default user codes the next step you need to take to access your home is to set new user codes to your Schlage Lock.

User codes that only you know and are easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Setting new users code will help ensure that your home is always secure.

Adding new user codes is an easy process that only requires a few steps to do. Follow the steps below to add a new user code to your Schlage Lock. 

Step One: On the keypad enter your current personal programming code, this will access the programming mode on your Schlage Lock. 

Step Two: Press the Schlage button on the keypad. Pressing this button will access the user code programming menu.

Step Three: Press the number 1, this will allow you the option to add a new user code.

Step Five: Enter the new 4-digit user code on the keypad that you want for your Schlage Lock.

Step Six: Re-enter the new user code correctly to confirm it. 

Step Seven: Test to see if the new user code is saved on your Schlage Lock by locking the door and using the new code to unlock the door. Repeat this process for any additional user codes you want to add to your Schlage Lock.

With all that being said, when you have lost the programming code to your Schlage Lock all hope is not lost there are ways you can access your lock.

Either by finding the default programming code or doing a factory reset on the Schlage Lock. Once you have gained access to programming your Schlage Lock once again there are a few things you should do to make sure this does not happen again.

As stated above you should change your programming code for a code that you will not forget and is hard for others to guess. 

The next thing you should do is delete the default user codes that way no one else can access your lock the way you just did by using common default codes.

You should next all-new user codes that are easy for you to remember. Write the new codes down and put them in a safe place that no one else has access to.

If none of these steps have helped and you still can not access your Schlage Lock then it is time for you to contact the Schlage customer service or call a professional locksmith to see if they can solve this issue and get you access to your lock.

In the worst-case scenario you may have to purchase a new Schlage Lock but make sure you have done everything I listed above before you spend the money.
