Blink Doorbell Back Cover Won't Attach

There are times when you may need to detach and then remount the Blink doorbell back cover or back plate. This may be because you want to replace it or because you want to install new batteries.

Detaching and remounting the Blink doorbell back cover is a fairly easy process, but there are times when it may seem that it simply won’t work.

Not to worry, I am going to guide you step-by-step on how to get your Blink doorbell back cover or back plate to attach seamlessly so you can continue enjoying your security system without a hitch.

Why Won’t Blink Doorbell Back Cover Attach?

Note: If your doorbell back cover won’t attach, there might be a problem with your backplate. Luckily, I’ve published an article that will help you replace your blink doorbell backplate if you need to.

1. You Are Attaching It Wrong

The most likely reason why your Blink doorbell back cover or back plate won’t attach is because you are trying to attach it the wrong way.

To successfully attach the back cover, you need to use the right tools, procedure, and measurements.

Fix – Attach The Back Plate Properly

First, get the following materials and tools:

  • A tape measure
  • A screwdriver or a drill bit
  • Screws and wall anchors

And, of course, your back cover.

The method you use to attach the back cover depends on the type of back cover you are using. Blink back covers come in either two mounting holes or three mounting holes.

For two mounting holes, do this:

  1. First, you need to decide on a proper location for the doorbell. When you have found this, clean the surface well.
  2. Make sure that this surface is flat and sturdy
  3. To determine how far apart you need to drill the mounting holes, you must use the paper template that is included with your doorbell. We will get to that in a minute
  4. At this point, check to see if you are drilling anywhere near live electrical wires. If you are, then make sure to turn off all power to the location from the circuit breaker.
  5. If you are mounting on a standard wall, you need just the screws. If you are mounting on brick, stucco, or drywall, then you would need the wall anchor
  6. Tape the paper template 40 to 48 inches above the floor
  7. Drill two guide holes approximately 1 inch or 2.5 cm deep
  8. If you’re mounting on brick, stucco, or drywall materials, please make sure to use the included white plastic wall anchors. The included wall anchors fit the hole from a 7/32 inches or 5.41mm drill bit
  9. Now, drill the holes through the hole locations on the template that you taped to the wall
  10. Now, remove the paper template
  11. If you are not using existing wires but such wires are present, secure the wire terminals with an insulated material to prevent electric shock or sparking. If you still have the grey terminal caps included with your blink video doorbell, then these will serve perfectly for the purpose.
  12. Now, attach the back plate to the surface with two screws. At this point, do not over tighten.
  13. Make sure to use only two screws to mount the back plate.
  14. Again, make sure that you mount the back plate on a firm and flat surface, in order to form a weather seal with the doorbell.
  15. Finally, align the top edge of video doorbell to the back plate at an angle so it aligns properly.
  16. Push it firmly against the back plate until you hear it click, to confirm it’s in place and secure
  17. Do not worry if there is a gap between the doorbell and the back plate as this will not impact weather resistance

For three mounting holes, do this:

  1. First of all, if you are installing on a flat surface, then use the top and bottom mounting holes.
  2. If you are installing on an uneven or smaller surface, then use the top and middle mounting holes. For this, be sure not to over tighten the middle screw
  3. Decide where you would like to place your device
  4. I recommend taping the included template about 40 to 48 inches high or where a previous doorbell was located
  5. Drill a hole at the top and bottom position
  6. Again, only use the middle hole for uneven or small services
  7. Remove the template, align the back plate to the holes you drilled and use the included screws to manually screw the back plate to the wall
  8. Be sure not to over tighten them
  9. Align the top edge of video doorbell to the back plate at an angle so it aligns properly
  10. Push it firmly against the back plate until you hear and feel it click, to confirm it’s in place and secure
  11. Do not worry if there is a gap between the doorbell and the back plate as this will not impact weather resistance

2. Your Back Cover Is Defective

If you have carefully followed the steps above to attach your Blink doorbell back cover and it still won’t attach, then it is likely that the back cover you have is defective.

When you follow the right steps, attaching a Blink back cover and the doorbell is straightforward, and you don’t need to be a security systems technician to get it done.

Fix – Replace Your Back Cover

Purchase another Blink doorbell back cover from Amazon. Some back covers do not even need drilling, which makes your life a whole lot easier.

Installing Batteries

If you are trying to install new batteries when you experience the issue of back cover not attaching, then make sure you are following the right steps as outlined below:

  1. First, remove the doorbell from its mounting plate or back cover by using the release key that came taped to the paper template in the product box.
  2. Press the key straight into the slot on the bottom of the doorbell unit until the gray catch is released, in order to disconnect the doorbell from its mounting plate.
  3. Then, pull the doorbell off the mounting plate
  4. Next, turn the doorbell over so that you are facing the back
  5. Lift the bottom edge of the latch at the bottom of the doorbell to release the cover and expose the batteries. You can then remove and replace them.
  6. After replacing the batteries, carefully insert the tabs at the top of the door into slots near the terminal screws
  7. Finally, push the bottom of the back cover until the latch clicks into place
  8. To remount the doorbell, align its top with the top of the back plate or back cover so that the hook sets properly.
  9. Then, press the bottom firmly against the back plate so that you hear a click
  10. At this point, it’s a good idea to test the doorbell by pressing the button
